Andreas Zandrén, the then Head of Product Development at BabyBjörn, was entrusted with developing a new cradle that was functional, intelligently designed but, above all, safe. This task was a real challenge and many ideas were considered before the development team had finally produced a prototype that met all of the strict requirements.

During the development phase, Andreas had read American physician Mark Brandenburg's book "Child Safe", which gives handy tips to parents on how they can prevent their children from hurting themselves at home. The book included a special warning about cradles and mentioned the scarcity of safe cradles which were available on the market. Andreas asked Dr. Brandenburg to meet him and take a look at his prototype.

The story behind the BABYBJÖRN Cradle – safety
Doctor Brandenburg

Doctor Brandenburg welcomed Andreas into his home in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He examined the prototype and was actually impressed – its unique design solved the biggest safety issue!

Doctor Brandenburg contends that the greatest risk with cradles is that they can get stuck at an angle that can be dangerous for the baby. But this cradle stood firmly on the floor, did not have a traditional rocking movement and so could not get stuck in any one position. Furthermore, this solution also created a gentle and soothing rocking movement that would help the baby to fall asleep.

After Andreas and his team had made some minor changes suggested by Doctor Brandenburg, the cradle was finally ready to be launched. After six years of product development, the proud development team was finally able to introduce the new BABYBJÖRN Cradle to babies and parents around the world.
